Managing
the Plan
The Plan doesn’t offer disability pensions. Even if you become disabled, you must wait until your normal retirement age to receive your pension.
Disabled members can choose to continue contributing to earn service credits while disabled. To qualify, a doctor must fill out a form certifying your disability, and you must submit this completed form within 45 days of becoming disabled. The form is available from your employer’s personnel office.
If you choose to continue contributing, your employer will match your contributions.
You can buy credit for your eligible past service with a participating employer if this time isn’t already counted in the Plan or any other registered pension plan. You must pay the full cost. When you buy this time, it adds to your pensionable service and increases your retirement benefits.
The cost varies based on how many years you want to buy, your age when buying, and other personal factors. You can pay in one lump sum or spread payments over time, but the payment period can’t be longer than the period you’re buying.
If you have eligible past service that you’re interested in purchasing, please contact your employer’s personnel office for an estimate.
